Our Philosophy

Fun

Life as an adult is not always fun. If you live with disability or chronic illness, a huge amount of time and energy can be taken up by medical appointments; symptom management; resting - there’s a reason they call it a full-time job! We don’t do toxic positivity around here - but we do try to provide opportunities for fun and joyfulness, because we know they can be hard to come by.

Access

Accessibility is central to what we do. While it isn’t possible to make our sessions perfectly accessible to everyone 100% of the time, we try our best to provide clear access information for all of our sessions. If you’d like to join us but would be prevented from doing so due to the inaccessibility of our offer, please get in touch and we’ll do our best to support you to join.

Meet the Team

Hi! I’m Mo. I had been supporting communities & running creative workshops since 2012 when I got sick with what was eventually diagnosed as Long Covid, ME/CFS, Chronic Migraine & Endometriosis. I desperately missed being silly, having fun and meeting new people, but not being able to guarantee how I might feel on any given day made it difficult to access traditional social spaces. I founded the Slowcial Life as an attempt to make fun easier to come by in lives that can feel dominated by symptoms, exhaustion or isolation. Thanks for checking us out!

Hey! I’m Heather. I’m in my late 20’s, I’ve been disabled since 2019 and live with several chronic illnesses. I have two lovely rescue cats called Maisie and Stanley.

I joined my first Chronic Craft Club as a participant early in 2025. Since then, I’ve joined the Slowcial team to help organise things behind the scene and keep our projects running smoothly.

The Slowcial History

The Slowcial Life was started by Mo in 2024. She had built a career built around increasing opportunities to access culture and the arts and supporting people experiencing difficult life circumstances. Then, one day, she got sick and didn’t get better.

Shocked to realise how little provision there was for people who are excluded from mainstream social, arts or cultural activities due to disability, illness and fatigue, she decided to make a change. In October 2024, she launched the first Chronic Craft Club session.

Chronic Craft Club allows participants to purchase a craft pack which gets delivered to their door. Craft packs are designed with those living with lower energy in mind, and come with a how-to sheet and access to two group video calls. This means you can decide on the day if you feel up to joining a live workshop or not - no need to decide in advance. Unlike a regular craft workshop, if you book and end up not being able to attend the session, you still have all your materials and the how-to sheet, so you can complete the activity at a time that better suits you.

The first Chronic Craft Club sold out within days and extra sessions were eventually added so more people could join. We’ve been running Chronic Craft Club sessions ever since!

In 2025, we added a wider range of sessions to our programme. Some of our most popular offerings include our monthly ‘Doodle N Chat’ and season-based sessions such as ‘Creative Rituals for the Winter Solstice’ and ‘Self-Love 4 Sick Babes’ on Valentines’ Day.

Early in 2026, we were grateful to be awarded funding through Arts Council England. This has allowed us to formally register as a Community Interest Company (a type of non-profit organisation in the UK), set up this website and hire some incredible staff to help us oversee this period of expansion and change.

Our plans for 2027 and beyond include partnering with more businesses and organisations whose values are similar to ours and reaching a bigger audience with our work.
